Tips for growing a long coat
The long Yorkie coat is one of the most beautiful looks for a Yorkie. To keep the coat long and beautiful, most owners trim the hair around the feet and in between the pads of the feet and trim the hair on the tips of the ears. When the hair grows beyond floor length, the saddle hair is trimmed by standing the Yorkie on a table with the hair falling over the edge of the table and the hair is trimmed just below the floor line.
To grow a great coat, here are some tips: first, a good quality shampoo like ours is a great start. Never use a human shampoo / conditioner on your Yorkie. Always use conditioner after washing. And, never brush the hair when the coat is dry – this can lead to breakage. Always use something to moisten the coat before brushing or combing - our detangling spray is excellent. :) Second, feed a quality diet.
Look in to a high quality dog food such as Orijen, Innova EVO Small Bites, Nature's Variety Instinct (not rabbit), Wellness CORE, and Solid Gold Barking at The Moon as good foods.
Another thing to consider is an Omega 3 supplement or a multi-vitamin with Omega 3's. Probably the best choice here is coconut oil. The health benefits of coconut oil are many and wide-ranging. From skin issue to join problems, coconut oil can make a huge difference. The dosage for coconut oil in dogs is 1/2 teaspoon daily per 10 pounds of weight. The coconut oil can be melted and drizzled over your Yorkie's food. They love the taste and it's very good for them.
Finally, a good massage helps send more blood to the skin, and the hair needs blood to grow and stay looking healthy. When your Yorkie in your lap, just think about giving her a massage and getting every bit of skin you can - bringing blood to the surface of the skin and feeding the hair.
